I train dogs to avoid a rattlesnake bite by teaching them to be able to detect the smell of a rattlesnake and avoid it. This is done using a live rattlesnake and a shock collar. The point is to clearly associate the distinct smell of a rattlesnake with a sharp pain. A lot of people don't like shock collars, but the small pain can help avoid the deadly pain, and it is important that the dogs stop before getting within striking distance of the snakes.
